Focus text this week: The Gruffalo

Monday

Name Writing– Practice writing your first name. Can you write your surname? Use a name card if you need help, then practice it without. Did you remember all the letters? Can you write any  ‘n’ words from last week?

Phonics – Make your own flash card. Today we are focusing on the sound ‘g’, like in the word ‘got’. Make a card like the one below. Can you read the following g words? Add dots if you need: get, got, gas, gum fog, dog, beg, leg, peg

Challenge: write 5 words that include the g sound in them. Can you add zips and buttons to your words?

Last week we read the story of The Gruffalo. Can you remember any of the rhyming couplets that were in the story? For example, wood and good? What rhymed with fox? What rhymed with stream? This week are going to look at how the author describes the gruffalo. Read ‘The Gruffalo Model Text- Character Description’ and make up actions for each line to help you remember it. Learn the first two lines of the description. Can you say this in the mirror? Can you perform it to a member of your family?

Writing Challenge:  Draw and label the gruffalo from the character description. You could paint it, use pastels or collage him!

Draw some 2D shapes with straight lines and curved lines.  Tell someone what they are. Colour the 2D shapes on the activity sheet.

Topic

This week we are going to learn all about minibeasts. Talk to your adult, what do you think a minibeast is? Use the powerpoint to look at the habitats of minibeasts. Use the worksheet to match the minibeast to their habitat.

Creative

We have learnt that minibeasts have a habitat as well and what they need to survive and stay happy. Use some junk model or materials in the garden to make them a bug hotel! Thy like things to hide in, warm materials to sleep in and things to make it dark and damp.

Join in with Mr Maker and do the shape dance.  Get your grown ups to join in too!

Can you remember the animals that the mouse met on his woodland walk? Where did each animal live? Yesterday we looked at the description of the gruffalo. Can you remember the imitation (where you made up actions) for the first two lines? Can you perform this for a member of your family? Now read the following two lines so you have read a total of four. Again, can you make up the actions for his knobbly knees, turned out toes and poisonous wart? Now practice all four lines you have learnt from the very beginning. Keep practising it during the day so you don’t forget it!

Writing-     The gruffalo is having a party with his friends. Can you draw and label a menu for them? Re-read the story of the gruffalo to give you ideas!

Cut out the 2D coloured / shaded shapes on the activity sheet, naming them as you go. Fit them onto the rocket. How many triangles? How many squares? How many rectangles? How many circles?  If you have glue, glue the shapes on the rocket.

Topic

Recap what a minibeast is. Today we are going to learn more about the different minibeast. Use the powerpoint to find out more about each minibeast. Can you remember some of the places we can find minbeasts? Let’s go and look for some today, use the hunt sheet to help you.

Creative

We can use different materials and resource to stamp different patterns. Find some objects in your house that you can use to stamp that will help you to make a minibeast pictures. You can use different objects for different minibeasts, you can even use your hands!


P.E.Skills

With a big ball (sphere) and a grown up, practise throwing it to each other. Stand close together so you don’t drop it too much. Next, sit down, legs wide like a ‘V’ and roll the ball to each other!  Count how many times you pass it to each other!

 

Wednesday

Can you perform your imitation of the gruffalo character description so far? You should have the actions for the first four lines. The adult is going to ask you to show them the action for one of the body parts we have learnt so far and you are going to show us! Can you show me ‘terrible claws’? Can you show me ‘knobbly knees’? Can you show me ‘terrible tusks’?  Now imitate the first four lines for a family member or practice it in a mirror. Can you make him sound really scary? Did you remember it all in the correct order? Now we are going to learn the last part:
His eyes are orange.

His tongue is black.

He has purple prickles all over his back.

Just like we have done on Monday and Tuesday, practice the imitation throughout the day. You could say one line and ask a member of your family what the next line is!

 Writing– Write a wanted poster for the gruffalo. Don’t forget to draw a detailed picture. To help you, use your imitation. Draw each body part as you say it out loud. Don’t forget to add reward money and where he was last seen!

Today we are going make a shape spider! See the activity sheets. Can you remember any 2D flat shapes from yesterday? Using scissors, carefully cut out the spider legs and body. Glue the spider onto the web.  How many legs do spiders have? Why do they spin webs? What do spiders eat? Go searching for a spider.

Topic

What have we learnt about minibeasts so far? What is a minibeast? Where do they live? How many legs does a… have? What do they eat? Use the What am I powerpoint game to guess the different minibeasts that are hiding.

Writing– We know the gruffalo enjoys eating and we made a menu for him on Tuesday. What else would you like to know about him? What is his favourite hobby? Does he have a favourite television programme? What are his friends called? Does he get upset when other animals run away from him? What makes him happy?

There are 3 activity sheets today.  Have a look at all the images and see how many 2D shapes you can spot! You could cut them out and sort them into piles!

Topic

Which is your favourite minibeast and why? How many legs do they have? If you were that minibeast, how would you move? Show me. Where would you leave and what would you need to eat? What is the life cycle? Tell your adult all this information, you can even write it in a minibeast book. Draw yourself as a minibeast.

Creative

Use junk modelling and craft materials to make your favourite minibeast and add your face to it. It can be a drawing or a photo, just turn yourself into a minibeast! You could even decorate it on a biscuit.


P.E. Fitness

Get your running outfit on and go for a run with a grown up! Chase each other. Who is quicker? Try and get puffed out because that is good for you!

Listen to the story again, each time the mouse begins to describe the gruffalo can you complete your imitation? “A gruffalo! Why, didn’t you know?”…

Writing– Can you draw each woodland animal we meet in the story and write what they might say to the gruffalo? Some might ask him questions. Cut out the gruffalo characters and practice what they might say before you write in your speech bubble.

Friday night is pizza night!  Spoil yourself and create your own tasty 2D pizza together! As you make your pizza, describe the 2D shapes using the words straight / curved / flat / same size.

Topic

Can you remember when you started school in September? How were you feeling? What were you excited about doing? Think about school now, what have you learnt? Which friends have you made? School is different at the moment but you will be back soon. You might be feeling like your first day again, but remember that this is ok and you will not be feeling like this once you have been back for a few days. Remember all the fun things you have done and you will get to do them again, you will get to see your friends and learn lots of new things. Share any of your worries with your adult, and say three things you are looking forward to when you come back to school.
